Lupe went to the park with her dad. They had a red kite.

The wind was strong. The kite went up, up, up into the sky.

Then the wind stopped. The kite fell down into a bush.

Dad pulled the kite out of the bush. Soon the wind came back, and the kite flew again.

The question

Read the question and the three answers aloud to your child.

Why did the kite fall down?

  • The string broke.
  • The wind stopped.Correct answer
  • A bird hit it.

Why “The wind stopped.” is correct

The story says "Then the wind stopped. The kite fell down into a bush." The child has to connect the cause in one sentence to the result in the next. Asking "what happened right before the kite fell?" is a smaller step that often unlocks the "why".

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The string broke. — A broken string is a common reason kites fall, but nothing breaks in this story.
  • A bird hit it. — No bird is in the story. A child who picks this is imagining what could happen in the sky.
