How to Take the Official ELPAC Practice and Training Tests

The California Department of Education publishes free online ELPAC practice tests and training tests. They run in the same system students use on test day, and they are worth doing, but getting into them is not obvious and they give no answers on screen. Here is how to open them and how to get the most out of them.

Practice test or training test: which one?

Both are free, both run in the student testing interface, and neither produces a score. They do different jobs.

A training test is short. It exists so a student can see the screens, buttons and tools before test day: how to play audio, move between questions, flag a question and record a spoken answer. Do it once, close to the testing window.

A practice test is longer and shows the full range of task types for a grade band. It is built from the Summative ELPAC, but the state recommends it for the Initial ELPAC as well; for an older student taking the Initial test, either the grades 9–10 or the grades 11–12 practice test will do.

How to open the official practice test as a guest

You do not need a student login. These steps follow the state's own quick reference guide, last revised in December 2025. Labels on the site can change from year to year, but the order has stayed the same.

Any current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge works. The secure testing browser that schools install is optional for practice.

  • Go to caaspp-elpac.org and choose the Practice and Training Tests tile.
  • Choose Student Access to Tests, which opens the student sign-in page.
  • Choose to continue as a guest, then confirm the guest session.
  • Pick the student's grade from the list.
  • Pick ELPAC as the content area, then choose either the practice test or the training test.
  • Turn on any accessibility settings the student uses at school, such as zoom or color contrast.
  • Sign in, run the sound check so you know the audio works, and begin the test.

What is hard about the official tests at home

A guest session cannot be paused and resumed later. Only a student signed in with their own school ID can do that, so set aside enough time to finish, or plan to start again.

Nothing is marked on screen. To check answers, open the practice test scoring guide for the grade band, which lists the correct answers and the scoring considerations for speaking and writing. The scoring guides and directions for administration are linked from the practice and training test page on caaspp-elpac.org.

At kindergarten to grade 2, and for speaking at every grade, the real test is given one to one by a test examiner. The practice test expects an adult to play that part, and the directions for administration PDF tells you what the examiner says.

Some older links that still show up in search results, such as a how-to PDF and earlier scoring guides, now lead to missing pages. If a link is broken, start again from the Practice and Training Tests tile.

A good way to use both

Start with practice that explains itself. The free ELPAC practice tests by grade on this site mark each answer as you go and explain why it is right and why the others are wrong, which is where most of the learning happens.

Then, closer to the testing window, sit the official training test once so the screens are familiar, and work through the official practice test for the student's grade band with its scoring guide beside you.

Pick the grade band the student is in: kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2, grades 3–5, grades 6–8, grades 9–10 or grades 11–12.

Common questions

Is the official ELPAC practice test free?

Yes. Anyone can open the official practice and training tests as a guest on caaspp-elpac.org, with no student login and no cost.

Does the official ELPAC practice test give a score?

No. Neither the practice test nor the training test produces a score. Answers for the practice test are in a separate scoring guide PDF for each grade band; the training test has none.

Can the ELPAC practice test help with the Initial ELPAC?

Yes. The online practice tests are built from the Summative ELPAC, and the state recommends them for both. A few task types appear only on the Summative test. See Initial vs Summative ELPAC for how the two differ.

Can my child pause the official practice test and finish later?

Not as a guest. Pausing and resuming works only for a student signed in with their own school ID, so a guest session has to be finished in one sitting or started again.
