ELPAC practice test for grade 1

Grade 1 is also given one to one by a test examiner, so this practice is written for an adult and child to work through together. Some tasks on the real test use pictures; the site has no images, so those pictures are described in words instead.

Grade 1 has its own form of the test. The reading and listening practice below is scored as you go, with an explanation after every question. Writing and speaking cannot be scored automatically — a trained person judges them against a rubric on the real test — so those pages give you the prompts, the rubric, a worked sample and personalized practice feedback instead of a score. Work through one part at a time to get used to a single task type, or take the mixed practice test to practice switching between them the way the real test does.

ELPAC for grade 1: common questions

What is on the grade 1 ELPAC?

Grade 1 has its own form of the test, given one to one by a test examiner. Reading includes choosing the word or sentence that matches a picture, then short informational passages, stories and longer informational passages. Listening covers short exchanges, classroom conversations, stories and short presentations. Speaking asks the child to talk about a scene, give an opinion, retell a story from pictures and summarize a presentation the examiner reads aloud.

What grade 1 ELPAC practice is on this site?

There are 22 listening questions, 22 reading questions, 4 speaking prompts and 5 writing prompts. There are also two mixed practice tests of reading and listening, with 20 and 23 questions, none repeated between them, in the order the real test presents them. Every reading and listening question has an explanation. The real test uses pictures for some tasks; this site has no images, so those pictures are described in words.

What writing does the grade 1 ELPAC ask for?

There are four writing task types at grade 1: writing a story together with the test examiner, writing a short description of a picture, listening to a short informational passage and then composing a text about it with the examiner, and writing about a common experience such as a classroom event. Each writing prompt here comes with a rubric, a worked sample and personalized practice feedback rather than a score, since a trained person scores writing on the real test.

How is the grade 1 ELPAC scored?

Results are reported as an overall performance level from 1 (minimally developed) to 4 (well developed), plus an oral language score for listening and speaking and a written language score for reading and writing. From grade 1 onward those two count equally toward the overall level. Speaking and writing are scored by a trained person against a rubric. Practice scores on this site are not calibrated against the real test and cannot estimate a level.
