Jamal: Ms. Okafor, I need more blue paint.

Ms. Okafor: Here you go. What are you painting?

Jamal: I am painting the ocean.

The question

Read the question and the three answers aloud to your child.

What is Jamal painting?

  • the sky
  • a blue car
  • the oceanCorrect answer

Why “the ocean” is correct

Jamal asks for blue paint, and blue fits several things, so the answer only comes in his last line: "I am painting the ocean." That is the point of the item — the first clue narrows it down but does not settle it. If your child says "the sky", tell them that is a good guess for blue paint and ask them to listen to the end once more.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • the sky — The sky is blue too, so this is the strongest guess for a child who heard "blue paint" and stopped. Jamal says ocean.
  • a blue car — No car is mentioned. This catches a child who heard the color and invented the rest.
