Sam: Ms. Reed, who is picking me up today?
Ms. Reed: Your grandpa is coming. He will be here after story time.
The question
Read the question and the three answers aloud to your child.
Who will pick Sam up today?
- his mom
- his grandpaCorrect answer
- his sister
Why “his grandpa” is correct
Ms. Reed answers Sam's question directly: "Your grandpa is coming." Family words are some of the first a young English learner knows, so this is a good check that your child is listening for the word that answers "who". If your child says "mom", ask them to listen for who Ms. Reed said and play her line again.
Why the other answers are wrong
- his mom — Mom is the most likely guess for any child, but she is not mentioned.
- his sister — No sister is mentioned. A child with an older sister who does pick-ups may answer from their own life.
