Hana: Jamal, look at my new shoes!

Jamal: They are pink. Do they light up?

Hana: Yes! They light up when I jump.

The question

Read the question and the three answers aloud to your child.

When do Hana's shoes light up?

  • when she sleeps
  • when she sits down
  • when she jumpsCorrect answer

Why “when she jumps” is correct

The answer is the last thing Hana says: "They light up when I jump." A "when" question is a step up from "what", because the child has to pick out the part of the sentence that says the time or the action. Have your child show you with a jump; acting it out often helps the word stick.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • when she sleeps — Sleeping is not mentioned. This answer usually means the child did not catch the last line.
  • when she sits down — Sitting down is not mentioned, and it is almost the opposite of jumping.
