Sofia: Mr. Salazar, can I have an apple for my snack?

Mr. Salazar: We have no apples today. You can have a banana.

Sofia: OK. Thank you!

The question

Read the question and the three answers aloud to your child.

What will Sofia have for her snack?

  • an apple
  • a bananaCorrect answer
  • a sandwich

Why “a banana” is correct

Sofia asks for an apple, but Mr. Salazar says there are none and offers a banana, and she agrees. The skill is noticing that what someone asks for is not always what they get, which means listening past the first turn. Ask your child "did Sofia get what she asked for?" before you ask the question again.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • an apple — The apple is what Sofia asked for, and the first food word a child hears. Mr. Salazar says there are no apples today.
  • a sandwich — No sandwich is mentioned. This is a guess about snack time in general.
