Luis: Ms. Okafor, my pencil broke.
Ms. Okafor: Oh no. You can get a new one from the cup on my desk.
The question
Read the question and the three answers aloud to your child.
Where can Luis get a new pencil?
- from the cup on the deskCorrect answer
- from his backpack
- from the floor
Why “from the cup on the desk” is correct
Luis says what is wrong and Ms. Okafor answers with where to go, so the answer is in the second turn. Short exchanges at kindergarten are usually built this way: a problem, then a fix. If your child is unsure, play only Ms. Okafor's line again and ask "where did she say?"
Why the other answers are wrong
- from his backpack — A backpack is a sensible place to keep pencils, but Ms. Okafor never mentions it.
- from the floor — The floor is not mentioned. A child who picks it may be thinking of where a broken pencil ends up.
