Teacher in an armchair reading a book to students sitting on a classroom rug during rain
Read image description

Rain runs down a classroom window. Inside, a group of students sits close together on a rug. Their teacher sits in an armchair in front of them and holds an open book up so they can see the pages.

The question

Read the four sentences. Choose the one that best describes the picture.

Which sentence best describes the picture?

  • The students read books on the rug by themselves.
  • The students play outside in the rain.
  • The teacher reads a book to the students on the rug.Correct answer
  • The teacher closes the classroom window.

Why “The teacher reads a book to the students on the rug.” is correct

Three of the four sentences contain something the picture really does show — a rug, rain, a window — so the child cannot choose by spotting one familiar word. The question tests whether the sentence matches the whole scene. A good habit to build is to read a sentence, then check every part of it against the description before moving on.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The students read books on the rug by themselves. — The students are on the rug, but only the teacher is holding a book, and she is reading it to them.
  • The students play outside in the rain. — The rain is outside the window; the students are indoors on the rug.
  • The teacher closes the classroom window. — There is a window in the picture, but the teacher is sitting in an armchair holding a book.
