The question

Read the four sentences. Choose the one that best describes the picture.

Which sentence best describes the picture?

  • A boy buys fruit from a market stand.Correct answer
  • A boy sells apples at a market stand.
  • A woman carries a basket of apples home.
  • A boy and a woman eat oranges at a table.

Why “A boy buys fruit from a market stand.” is correct

The real work here is telling 'buys' from 'sells', which describe the same event from opposite sides. English learners often meet both words at once and mix them up, so this is worth naming as a vocabulary point rather than a careless error. Ask the child who is giving the money and who is behind the stand, then decide which word fits the boy.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A boy sells apples at a market stand. — This reverses the roles. The boy is handing money over, which makes him the buyer, and the woman is behind the stand.
  • A woman carries a basket of apples home. — The woman is standing at the stand with the baskets in front of her, not carrying one away.
  • A boy and a woman eat oranges at a table. — Oranges are in the picture, but nobody is eating, and the table holds the fruit for sale.
