Brown wooden chair with straight back standing next to a desk
Read image description

A brown wooden seat stands next to a small desk. It has four legs and a tall straight back. One person could sit on it.

The question

Read the four sentences. Choose the one that best describes the picture.

Which sentence best describes the picture?

  • A soft couch sits next to a small desk.
  • A boy sits on a chair at his desk.
  • A wooden chair stands next to a small desk.Correct answer
  • A wooden chair lies on its side by the door.

Why “A wooden chair stands next to a small desk.” is correct

This picture is of a single object, so the sentence has to get the object and its position right. Two choices say 'wooden chair', and the difference between them is whether it stands by the desk or lies by the door. Remind your child to read to the end of every sentence before choosing.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A soft couch sits next to a small desk. — The seat in the picture is wooden with four legs and a straight back. A couch is soft and made for more than one person.
  • A boy sits on a chair at his desk. — No one is in the picture. The chair is empty.
  • A wooden chair lies on its side by the door. — The chair stands up on its four legs next to the desk. Nothing is on its side.
