Read image description

A golden brown loaf bakes inside an oven. The oven door is open. Steam rises from the crust.

The question

Read the four sentences. Choose the one that best describes the picture.

Which sentence best describes the picture?

  • A cake sits on a plate on the table.
  • A loaf of bread bakes in the oven.Correct answer
  • A woman takes bread out of the oven.
  • A pot of soup boils on the stove.

Why “A loaf of bread bakes in the oven.” is correct

Each wrong choice is something that could happen in a kitchen, so the child cannot choose by topic alone. Steam rising is a clue that also fits soup, and bread is in another choice too, so the child has to check what is happening and where. Ask: Is anyone in the picture? Is the food in the oven or on a stove?

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A cake sits on a plate on the table. — The food is still inside the oven, not on a plate, and it is a loaf, not a cake.
  • A woman takes bread out of the oven. — The bread is right, but no person appears in the picture, and the bread is still baking.
  • A pot of soup boils on the stove. — Steam rises in the picture, but it comes from a loaf in the oven, not a pot on the stove.
