Ms. Ortiz: Hector, I still need your permission slip for the trip to the farm.

Hector: I left it on the kitchen table. My dad signed it last night.

Ms. Ortiz: The bus leaves on Wednesday, and I need every slip by Tuesday.

Hector: Today is only Monday. I'll put it in my backpack as soon as I get home.

Ms. Ortiz: Good plan. You could set your backpack by the front door, too, so you don't forget it.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Where is Hector's permission slip now?

  • In his backpack
  • On the kitchen tableCorrect answer
  • On Ms. Ortiz's desk
  • On the bus

Why “On the kitchen table” is correct

The question asks where the slip is now, but the conversation also talks about where it will go. Hector's plan to put it in his backpack is about later, so the child has to keep 'now' and 'later' apart. Ask your child where Hector says he left the slip.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • In his backpack — Putting it in his backpack is Hector's plan for when he gets home. It is not there yet.
  • On Ms. Ortiz's desk — Ms. Ortiz is still waiting for the slip, so it is not on her desk.
  • On the bus — The bus is for the trip on Wednesday. The slip is not on it.
