Jamal: Dana, our poster is about ways to save water. What should we draw first?

Dana: Let's draw someone turning off the water while they brush their teeth.

Jamal: Good idea. I can draw a short shower too, with a timer next to it.

Dana: What about the title? It has to be big so people can read it from the door.

Jamal: Your letters are neater than mine. Can you write it?

Dana: Sure. I'll use the blue marker, and you can color in the drawings.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Why does Jamal ask Dana to write the title?

  • She has the blue marker.
  • She wants to color the drawings.
  • Her letters are neater than his.Correct answer
  • She is standing by the door.

Why “Her letters are neater than his.” is correct

Jamal gives his reason just before he asks: 'Your letters are neater than mine.' The blue marker comes after, when Dana agrees, which makes it a tempting wrong answer. Ask your child what Jamal says right before 'Can you write it?'

Why the other answers are wrong

  • She has the blue marker. — Dana mentions the blue marker after she agrees to write the title. It is not why Jamal asked.
  • She wants to color the drawings. — Dana says Jamal can color the drawings, so coloring is his job, not hers.
  • She is standing by the door. — The door is where people will read the poster from. Nobody is standing there.
