Jamal: Dana, our poster is about ways to save water. What should we draw first?

Dana: Let's draw someone turning off the water while they brush their teeth.

Jamal: Good idea. I can draw a short shower too, with a timer next to it.

Dana: What about the title? It has to be big so people can read it from the door.

Jamal: Your letters are neater than mine. Can you write it?

Dana: Sure. I'll use the blue marker, and you can color in the drawings.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What is Jamal and Dana's poster about?

  • How to brush your teeth
  • Ways to save waterCorrect answer
  • How to use a timer
  • Ways to make a title big

Why “Ways to save water” is correct

Jamal names the topic in his first sentence, and the drawings they plan are examples of it. A topic question asks for the big idea, not one of the examples. Ask your child whether brushing teeth and a short shower are the topic or examples of the topic.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • How to brush your teeth — Turning off the water while brushing teeth is one picture on the poster, an example of saving water.
  • How to use a timer — The timer goes next to the shower drawing, as a way to save water. It is not the topic.
  • Ways to make a title big — The title has to be big so people can read it, but that is about the poster, not what the poster says.
