Mr. Vega: Camila, how tall is our tomato plant this week?
Camila: I measured it with the ruler. It's twelve inches tall.
Mr. Vega: Last week it was eight inches. How much did it grow?
Camila: It grew four inches! That's more than it grew the week before.
Mr. Vega: Nice work. Please write the number in our plant journal and draw a picture of the new leaves.
Camila: Okay. There are two new leaves at the top, so I'll draw those.
The question
Choose the best answer.
What will Camila do in the plant journal?
- Water the plant and write the date
- Write the number and draw the new leavesCorrect answer
- Measure the plant again with the ruler
- Draw a picture of the ruler
Why “Write the number and draw the new leaves” is correct
Mr. Vega gives a two-part instruction, and Camila's last line confirms the second part. The child has to keep both steps, which is a common demand in classroom conversations. Replay Mr. Vega's 'Please' sentence and count the two things he asks for.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Water the plant and write the date — Watering is never mentioned, and the journal gets a number and a drawing, not a date.
- Measure the plant again with the ruler — Camila has already measured the plant. That happened at the start of the conversation.
- Draw a picture of the ruler — The ruler is what Camila used to measure. The drawing is of the new leaves.
