Ms. Ortiz: Hector, I still need your permission slip for the trip to the farm.
Hector: I left it on the kitchen table. My dad signed it last night.
Ms. Ortiz: The bus leaves on Wednesday, and I need every slip by Tuesday.
Hector: Today is only Monday. I'll put it in my backpack as soon as I get home.
Ms. Ortiz: Good plan. You could set your backpack by the front door, too, so you don't forget it.
The question
Choose the best answer.
When does Ms. Ortiz need the permission slip?
- By Monday
- By Wednesday
- By Friday
- By TuesdayCorrect answer
Why “By Tuesday” is correct
Three days are named in this conversation, and each one means something different: Monday is today, Tuesday is when the slips are due, and Wednesday is the trip. Day-of-the-week questions like this are common at grade 2. Have your child say what happens on each day, then answer.
Why the other answers are wrong
- By Monday — Monday is today, according to Hector. The slip is due the next day.
- By Wednesday — Wednesday is when the bus leaves for the farm. The slip must be in before that.
- By Friday — Friday is not mentioned in this conversation.
