Grant: Ms. Ortiz, I finished my math page early. What should I do now?
Ms. Ortiz: You can read a book from the class library, or you can help Kai with the number cards.
Grant: I'll help Kai. He has a lot of cards to put in order.
The question
Choose the best answer.
What will Grant do next?
- Read a book from the class library
- Do another math page
- Help Kai put the number cards in orderCorrect answer
- Check his work with Ms. Ortiz
Why “Help Kai put the number cards in order” is correct
Ms. Ortiz offers two choices, and the answer depends on which one Grant picks in the last line. A child who stops listening after the teacher speaks will often choose the first option offered. Replay Grant's last line and ask what he decided.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Read a book from the class library — Reading is one of the two choices Ms. Ortiz offers, but Grant picks the other one.
- Do another math page — Grant has already finished his math page, and nobody suggests another one.
- Check his work with Ms. Ortiz — Checking his work is a sensible idea, but nobody mentions it in the exchange.
