Imani: Hector, did you hear about the class picture?
Hector: No. When is it?
Imani: Friday morning. We all have to wear our school shirts, and the picture is outside by the flagpole.
Hector: My school shirt has paint on it. I'd better ask my mom to wash it tonight.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Why does Hector want his mom to wash his shirt tonight?
- It has paint on it, and he needs it for the picture.Correct answer
- Imani told him his shirt was dirty.
- He has to wear it to the farm on Friday.
- It might rain by the flagpole.
Why “It has paint on it, and he needs it for the picture.” is correct
The reason is built from two parts of the exchange: Imani says everyone has to wear school shirts on Friday, and Hector says his has paint on it. The child has to join the problem to the plan. Ask your child what is wrong with Hector's shirt and why it matters this week.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Imani told him his shirt was dirty. — Imani tells Hector about the picture. Hector is the one who mentions the paint.
- He has to wear it to the farm on Friday. — The picture is on Friday, and it is at school by the flagpole. No farm is mentioned.
- It might rain by the flagpole. — Rain is not mentioned. The flagpole is just where the picture will be taken.
