Read image description

A man rides a bike. He wears a helmet. The road goes up a hill. A brown dog runs beside him.

The question

Read the four sentences. Choose the one that best describes the picture.

Which sentence best describes the picture?

  • A man rides his bike up a hill.Correct answer
  • A man walks next to his bike.
  • A man sits on a bench with his dog.
  • A man rides his bike down a hill.

Why “A man rides his bike up a hill.” is correct

This item turns on two small words at the end of the sentence: 'up' and 'down'. Every choice opens with 'A man', so a child who decides after the first three words has no chance of getting it right. Tell the child to read each sentence all the way to the final word before choosing.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A man walks next to his bike. — The man is on the bike in the picture, not walking beside it. 'Rides' and 'walks' are the difference.
  • A man sits on a bench with his dog. — The dog is in the picture, but the man is on his bike on the road, and there is no bench.
  • A man rides his bike down a hill. — This differs from the answer by one word. The picture says the road goes up the hill, not down.
