The question

Choose the best answer.

What will Camila take from Mr. Chan's desk?

  • A broken pencil
  • A pencil box
  • A green pencilCorrect answer
  • A cup

Why “A green pencil” is correct

Mr. Chan answers Camila's problem with one instruction, and the color word is the detail to catch. Every wrong answer is a thing named in the exchange, so a child who remembers words but not who does what will be pulled toward them. Replay Mr. Chan's line and ask what he says Camila can take.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A broken pencil — The broken pencil is Camila's own, and she is putting it away, not taking it.
  • A pencil box — The pencil box belongs to Camila. It is where she puts the broken pencil.
  • A cup — The cup is where the pencils are kept. Camila takes a pencil out of it, not the cup itself.
