Hi. My name is Rosa. I will tell you about baby ducks.
A baby duck is called a duckling. Ducklings hatch from eggs. They can swim on the first day.
Ducklings stay close to the mother duck. They walk behind her in a line. The mother keeps them safe.
The question
Choose the best answer.
What can ducklings do on their first day?
- Fly to a new place
- SwimCorrect answer
- Find their own food
- Lay eggs
Why “Swim” is correct
This is a supporting-detail question, and the detail is a surprising one, which makes it stick once a child has really heard it. The wrong answers are all things birds do at some point, so a child answering from general knowledge about ducks rather than from the talk can easily go astray. Ask what the speaker said ducklings can do, not what ducks can do.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Fly to a new place — Flying is never mentioned in the talk, and young ducklings cannot fly.
- Find their own food — The talk says ducklings stay close to their mother, and says nothing about finding their own food.
- Lay eggs — Eggs are mentioned because ducklings hatch from them, but laying eggs is what the mother duck does.
