The question
Choose the best answer.
What does the story show about Mia?
- She thinks about other people.Correct answer
- She is always in a hurry.
- She does not like to play.
- She is afraid of rain.
Why “She thinks about other people.” is correct
Character-trait questions ask for something the story never states, and children need practice recognizing that the evidence is in the actions. Here Mia gives up something she badly wants so that her friend's feet stay dry. Ask what Mia did for Sam, and then ask what that tells us about her — two steps, in that order.
Why the other answers are wrong
- She is always in a hurry. — Mia stops and waits rather than rushing, which is the opposite of being in a hurry.
- She does not like to play. — She wants to jump in the puddle and does it at lunch, so she clearly likes to play.
- She is afraid of rain. — She walks to school in the rain and plays in a puddle, so rain does not frighten her.
