Jin had a wiggly tooth. It moved when he touched it.

At lunch, Jin ate a crunchy apple. Crunch! His tooth came out.

Jin put the tooth in his pocket. At home, he showed it to his mom.

Mom said, "Look at your big smile with a little hole in it!" Jin laughed and laughed.

The question

Read the question and the three answers aloud to your child.

How did Jin feel at the end?

  • happyCorrect answer
  • sad
  • angry

Why “happy” is correct

The story does not say "happy", but it says Jin "laughed and laughed", and laughing shows how he felt. Working out a feeling from an action is an early inference skill. Ask your child "what do you do when you are happy?" to connect the two.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • sad — Losing a tooth could sound sad to a young child, but Jin laughs at the end.
  • angry — Nothing in the story makes Jin angry, and laughing does not go with being angry.
