The question
Read the four sentences. Choose the one that best describes the picture.
Which sentence best describes the picture?
- A man puts the chain back on a bicycle in a garage.
- A girl washes a bicycle in a garage.
- A girl puts the chain back on a bicycle on the sidewalk.
- A girl puts the chain back on a bicycle in a garage.Correct answer
Why “A girl puts the chain back on a bicycle in a garage.” is correct
Every choice names something that really is in this picture — a girl, a man, a bicycle, a garage — so recognizing a familiar word cannot decide it. The student has to check three things in turn: who is doing the work, what the work is, and where it is happening. Ask the student to point to the part of the description that rules each wrong sentence out.
Why the other answers are wrong
- A man puts the chain back on a bicycle in a garage. — The man is in the picture, but he is standing behind the girl and pointing. The greasy hands are hers.
- A girl washes a bicycle in a garage. — Washing would explain wet hands, not greasy ones, and no water or soap appears in the picture.
- A girl puts the chain back on a bicycle on the sidewalk. — The work is right and the person is right, but the bicycle is inside a garage, not out on a sidewalk.
