The question

Read the four sentences. Choose the one that best describes the picture.

Which sentence best describes the picture?

  • Three students buy lemonade from a teacher in the hallway.
  • Three students sell lemonade to a teacher in the hallway.Correct answer
  • Two students sell lemonade to a teacher in the hallway.
  • Three students sell lemonade to a teacher outside the gym.

Why “Three students sell lemonade to a teacher in the hallway.” is correct

Read and Choose a Sentence gives a student a picture and four sentences that are alike except for one detail each. Here the wrong answers change who is paying, how many students there are, and where the table stands, so reading only the first few words of a sentence gets nobody to the answer. The coins going into the jar settle the direction of the sale: the teacher is paying, so the students are selling.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Three students buy lemonade from a teacher in the hallway. — This reverses the sale. The teacher is putting coins in the jar and taking a cup, which makes the teacher the buyer.
  • Two students sell lemonade to a teacher in the hallway. — The action and the place are right, but the picture shows three students behind the table, not two.
  • Three students sell lemonade to a teacher outside the gym. — Everything matches except the place. The table is in a school hallway, and no gym is mentioned.
