Good morning. My name is Hana. My report is about sunflowers.

A sunflower grows very fast. In one summer it can grow taller than a grown-up.

Young sunflowers turn during the day. In the morning they face east. By evening they face west. At night they turn back.

When the flower is full grown, it stops turning. It faces east every morning. Bees like warm flowers, and the morning sun keeps it warm.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Which way does a young sunflower face in the morning?

  • EastCorrect answer
  • West
  • Down at the ground
  • Straight up at the sky

Why “East” is correct

The talk pairs two directions with two times of day in consecutive sentences, and the question asks the child to keep the pairs straight. Direction words are often new vocabulary for English learners, so it is worth checking that the child knows east and west before blaming a listening error. Have them hold up a hand for morning and one for evening on the replay.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • West — West is where the young sunflower faces by evening, at the end of the day rather than the start.
  • Down at the ground — The talk never says a sunflower faces the ground.
  • Straight up at the sky — Growing tall is mentioned, but the talk describes the flower turning east and west, not upward.
