Snails

A snail is a small animal with a hard shell on its back. The shell is its home. When a snail is scared, it pulls its body inside the shell.

A snail moves on one big foot. The foot makes slime. The slime helps the snail slide over rocks and leaves.

Snails like wet places. On hot, dry days they hide under leaves. They come out after it rains.

The question

Choose the best answer.

When do snails come out?

  • On hot, dry days
  • When they are scared
  • After it rainsCorrect answer
  • When they need a new shell

Why “After it rains” is correct

This question checks the last paragraph, which contrasts two kinds of weather. The passage says snails hide on hot, dry days and come out after it rains, so the child has to keep the two halves apart. Ask your child which kind of place snails like, then which kind of day matches it.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • On hot, dry days — This is the opposite. On hot, dry days snails hide under leaves.
  • When they are scared — When a snail is scared it goes into its shell, which is the opposite of coming out.
  • When they need a new shell — The passage says the shell is the snail's home. It never says snails get a new one.
