Snails

A snail is a small animal with a hard shell on its back. The shell is its home. When a snail is scared, it pulls its body inside the shell.

A snail moves on one big foot. The foot makes slime. The slime helps the snail slide over rocks and leaves.

Snails like wet places. On hot, dry days they hide under leaves. They come out after it rains.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What does a snail do when it is scared?

  • It slides over a rock.
  • It pulls its body inside its shell.Correct answer
  • It hides under a leaf.
  • It makes slime with its foot.

Why “It pulls its body inside its shell.” is correct

This is a find-the-detail question, and the answer is stated in the first paragraph, in the sentence that contains the word 'scared'. Every wrong answer is something snails really do in this passage, just not when they are scared. Have your child find the word 'scared' and read the rest of that sentence aloud.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • It slides over a rock. — Snails slide over rocks to move around, not to stay safe.
  • It hides under a leaf. — Snails hide under leaves on hot, dry days. That is about the weather, not about being scared.
  • It makes slime with its foot. — The foot makes slime so the snail can slide. The passage does not connect slime to being scared.
