What may you do after you put your old book in the box?

Read a Short Informational Passage · ELPAC Grade 1 reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

A brief factual text — a notice, a label, a set of instructions — followed by questions.

Read the notice. Then answer the questions.

Library Day

Our class goes to the library on Tuesday. Bring your library book back. Put it in the blue box by the door. Then you may pick one new book.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What may you do after you put your old book in the box?

  • Go back to class
  • Read to the class
  • Take three new books
  • Pick one new bookCorrect answer

Why “Pick one new book” is correct

This tests sequence inside a set of instructions: what comes after returning the old book. The word 'Then' at the start of the last sentence is the signal, and it is worth naming that word for the child explicitly. The number matters too — the notice allows one new book, and children routinely read past a limit like that.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Go back to class — Going back to class has to happen eventually, but the notice never says it, and it is not the next step.
  • Read to the class — Reading aloud to the class is a familiar school activity, but it appears nowhere in this notice.
  • Take three new books — This is the answer with the wrong number. The notice says one new book, not three.
