Which word goes with the picture? “fish”

Read and Choose a Word · ELPAC Grade 1 reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

The student reads three words and chooses the one that matches a picture.

An orange goldfish swimming in a glass tank with green plants
Read image description

A small orange animal swims in a glass tank. Green plants grow in the water. It moves its tail back and forth.

The question

Read the three words. Choose the word that goes with the picture.

Which word goes with the picture?

  • dish
  • wish
  • fishCorrect answer

Why “fish” is correct

Here all three choices rhyme, so the ends of the words are identical and the child has to attend to the first letter instead. Rhyming distractors are the second common pattern in this task, and they catch children who read by word shape. Ask the child to say all three aloud and listen only to the very first sound.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • dish — 'Dish' rhymes with the answer and even fits a kitchen, but nothing in the picture is a plate or bowl.
  • wish — 'Wish' rhymes too, and it names an idea rather than something you could see in a tank.
