Which word goes with the picture? “hat”
Read and Choose a Word · ELPAC Grade 1 reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The student reads three words and chooses the one that matches a picture.

Read image description
A boy stands in the sun. Something red sits on top of his head. It keeps the sun off his face.
The question
Read the three words. Choose the word that goes with the picture.
Which word goes with the picture?
- ham
- hatCorrect answer
- hop
Why “hat” is correct
Two of the three choices, 'ham' and 'hat', differ only in the last letter, so this item tests the final consonant sound. Children at this level often hear the beginning of a word clearly and guess the rest. Have the child stretch out the word for the red thing on the boy's head and listen for the /t/ at the end.
Why the other answers are wrong
- ham — 'Ham' matches the first two letters of the answer but names a food, not something worn on the head.
- hop — 'Hop' is an action word. The picture describes an object, so the answer has to name a thing.
