Nina: Mr. Chan, I can't find my lunch box.
Mr. Chan: Did you look in the coat closet?
Nina: Yes. It's not there. It is red with white stars.
Mr. Chan: Let's check the lost and found box in the office. Come with me.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Where will Nina and Mr. Chan go next?
- To the officeCorrect answer
- To the coat closet
- To the lunch room
- To Nina's house
Why “To the office” is correct
These exchanges usually end with a plan, and that is what the question asks for. The office is named only in the very last line, so a child who stops listening once the problem is described will pick the closet that was already checked. Tell the child that the last thing a speaker says is usually the plan.
Why the other answers are wrong
- To the coat closet — The closet has already been searched. Nina says the lunch box is not there.
- To the lunch room — A lunch box suggests the lunch room, but nobody in the conversation mentions going there.
- To Nina's house — The lunch box was brought to school, and there is no talk of going home.
