What is the title of this story?
Read-Along Story with Scaffolding · ELPAC Kindergarten reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The student follows along while the examiner reads a short story aloud, with pictures for support.
Sit with your child. Read the story aloud while your child follows along with your finger. The real test shows three pictures here; they are described in words under the story, so read those aloud too and talk about them. Then read each question and its three answers aloud.
The Big Box
Jose got a big box. He sat in the box. "This is my boat," he said. His sister Rosa got in the box too. They made waves with their arms. Then Mom said, "Time for lunch!" Jose and Rosa got out of the boat to eat.
Picture one: a boy sits in a big brown box on the floor of a living room.
Picture two: the boy and a girl sit in the box together. They move their arms like they are rowing.
Picture three: the two children sit at a table with their mom. The box is on the floor behind them.
The question
Read the question and the three answers aloud to your child. As you ask, point to the top of the story where the title is.
What is the title of this story?
- The Big BoxCorrect answer
- Jose and Rosa
- Time for Lunch
Why “The Big Box” is correct
Knowing that a story has a title, and that it sits at the top before the story starts, is one of the concepts of print a kindergarten read-along task checks. Point to the title and read it again, then point to where the story begins. If your child picks a name or an event from the story, they know what the story is about but not yet what a title is, which is worth a minute of explaining.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Jose and Rosa — Jose and Rosa are the people in the story, and it would be a sensible name for it, but it is not the title printed at the top.
- Time for Lunch — "Time for lunch" is something Mom says near the end. A child who picks it is remembering a line from the story rather than looking at the title.
