The question
Point at the word and say it slowly. Then read this question and the three answers aloud to your child.
Which sound does this word start with?
- the /j/ sound, like in jetCorrect answer
- the /g/ sound, like in goat
- the /m/ sound, like in moon
Why “the /j/ sound, like in jet” is correct
The /j/ sound is harder than /m/ or /f/ because you cannot stretch it; it is over in an instant. Say "jam" and "jet" one after the other and ask what is the same at the start. Some children who speak Spanish at home hear /j/ and /y/ as close together, so a hesitation here is about the sound system, not about effort.
Why the other answers are wrong
- the /g/ sound, like in goat — The letters g and j look alike to a beginner, which is why this is tempting, but "jam" does not start with the /g/ in goat. Say "jam" and "goat" one after the other and let your child hear the difference.
- the /m/ sound, like in moon — The /m/ sound is at the end of "jam". Ask which sound comes out first when the word is said slowly.
