After weeks of testing, the team was finally ready to draw a ______ about which material lasted longest.
Vocabulary and Grammar in Context · ELPAC Grades 9–10 reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Extra practice, not a separate task on the real test: a sentence with one word missing, testing the vocabulary and grammar the passages assume.
The question
Read the sentence. Choose the word that best completes it.
After weeks of testing, the team was finally ready to draw a ______ about which material lasted longest.
- condition
- contribution
- conclusionCorrect answer
Why “conclusion” is correct
This tests three academic nouns that look and sound alike, which is where most errors at this level come from. The collocation 'draw a conclusion' is fixed in academic English, and the sentence also supplies the logic: testing produces a judgment about results. Ask the student which of the three words could follow the verb 'draw'.
Why the other answers are wrong
- condition — A 'condition' is a requirement or a state something is in, and it is not something a person draws from evidence.
- contribution — A 'contribution' is something given or added, which does not describe what testing produces.
