Engineers warned that repairing the levee later rather than now would carry a serious ______ for every farm downstream.

Vocabulary and Grammar in Context · ELPAC Grades 6–8 reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Extra practice, not a separate task on the real test: a sentence with one word missing, testing the vocabulary and grammar the passages assume.

The question

Read the sentence. Choose the word that best completes it.

Engineers warned that repairing the levee later rather than now would carry a serious ______ for every farm downstream.

  • consequenceCorrect answer
  • condition
  • conclusion

Why “consequence” is correct

This tests three academic nouns that begin with the same two syllables and are frequently confused. The sentence describes a result that would follow from a decision about timing, and the noun for a result that follows from an action is 'consequence'. Have the student say the sentence back in plain words — 'waiting would cause something bad to happen to the farms' — and then match that meaning to a choice.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • condition — 'Condition' names the state something is in, or a requirement that must be met, not an effect produced by a decision.
  • conclusion — 'Conclusion' is an ending or a judgment drawn from evidence; the engineers are predicting an outcome, not finishing an argument.
