The list of approved fundraising activities ______ posted outside the main office.
Vocabulary and Grammar in Context · ELPAC Grades 6–8 reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Extra practice, not a separate task on the real test: a sentence with one word missing, testing the vocabulary and grammar the passages assume.
The question
Read the sentence. Choose the word that best completes it.
The list of approved fundraising activities ______ posted outside the main office.
- isCorrect answer
- are
- being
Why “is” is correct
This item tests subject-verb agreement when a prepositional phrase separates the subject from its verb. The subject is 'list', which is singular; 'of approved fundraising activities' only describes it. A reliable strategy for a student at this level is to cross out everything from 'of' to the verb and read what is left: 'The list is posted.'
Why the other answers are wrong
- are — 'Are' agrees with 'activities', the plural noun sitting closest to the verb, which is exactly the trap this sentence sets.
- being — 'Being' is a participle and cannot stand alone as the main verb; it would need a helper such as 'is' in front of it.
