Grant: Hana, my counselor says I need twenty volunteer hours before June, and I only have nine.

Hana: The animal shelter on Third Street signs off on hours, and they take students on Saturday mornings from nine until noon.

Grant: Do I need a parent to come with me?

Hana: Not for the front desk. You do for anything in the kennels, because of the safety rules.

Grant: The front desk is fine. I mostly need somebody who will actually sign the form.

What does Hana say about bringing a parent to the animal shelter?

  • A parent has to come along for every shift.
  • A parent is needed only for work with the animals in the kennels.Correct answer
  • A parent has to sign the volunteer hours form.
  • A parent is required because Grant is under sixteen.

Why “A parent is needed only for work with the animals in the kennels.” is correct

This question turns on a two-part answer delivered in compressed spoken English. Hana says 'Not for the front desk. You do for anything in the kennels', where 'You do' stands in for 'you do need a parent' — an ellipsis that heard-once listeners frequently mishear as a flat no. Students benefit from practice reconstructing what a short reply like 'You do' is replacing.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A parent has to come along for every shift. — Hana rules this out in her first three words: a parent is not needed for the front desk.
  • A parent has to sign the volunteer hours form. — Someone does have to sign Grant's form, but that is the shelter's job, not a parent's.
  • A parent is required because Grant is under sixteen. — Hana gives safety rules in the kennels as the reason, and no one mentions Grant's age.
