The library was so ______ that we could hear the clock ticking.

Vocabulary and Grammar in Context · ELPAC Grades 3–5 reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Extra practice, not a separate task on the real test: a sentence with one word missing, testing the vocabulary and grammar the passages assume.

The question

Read the sentence. Choose the word that best completes it.

The library was so ______ that we could hear the clock ticking.

  • crowded
  • bright
  • quietCorrect answer

Why “quiet” is correct

This tests vocabulary chosen from a context clue rather than from the word alone. The second half of the sentence is the clue: a ticking clock can only be heard in a silent room, so 'quiet' is the word that makes the sentence true. Ask the child which word the clue points to, not which word sounds best.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • crowded — A crowded library is a noisy one, which is the opposite of what the clue about the ticking clock tells us.
  • bright — 'Bright' describes light, and nothing in the sentence is about how the room looks.
