When can students look in the Lost and Found box?
Read a Short Informational Passage · ELPAC Grade 2 reading. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
A brief factual text — a notice, a label, a set of instructions — followed by questions.
Read the notice. Then answer the questions.
Lost and Found
Is your jacket missing? Look in the Lost and Found box outside the school office. The box is open before school and at lunch. Write your name inside your coat and your lunch box, so they can be given back to you if you lose them. On the last Friday of every month, things left in the box are given away to families who need them.
The question
Choose the best answer.
When can students look in the Lost and Found box?
- After school
- Before school and at lunchCorrect answer
- Only on Fridays
- During class
Why “Before school and at lunch” is correct
This is a find-the-detail question on a school notice, and the answer is stated in the sentence that begins 'The box is open'. Notices like this mix several times together — before school, lunch, the last Friday — so the child has to match the question to the right one. Ask your child to find the word 'open' and read that sentence aloud.
Why the other answers are wrong
- After school — The notice never mentions after school.
- Only on Fridays — Friday is in the notice, but it is when things are given away, not when the box is open.
- During class — Class time is not one of the times the notice gives.
