A Note About the Bus Stop

Note for families: The morning bus will stop at the corner of Oak Street next week. The stop by the park is closed while workers fix the sidewalk. The bus comes at eight o'clock. Please wait on the grass, not in the street.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Why will the bus stop at Oak Street next week?

  • Workers are fixing the sidewalk by the park.Correct answer
  • The park is closed for the winter.
  • The bus comes earlier next week.
  • The grass by the park is too wet.

Why “Workers are fixing the sidewalk by the park.” is correct

This is a cause question about a practical notice, and the cause sits in the second sentence while the change it explains sits in the first. Reading the two sentences as a pair is the skill. Ask the child what is wrong with the usual stop, then check that their answer explains why a different corner is being used.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The park is closed for the winter. — The note says the bus stop by the park is closed, not the park. Children often blur the two.
  • The bus comes earlier next week. — The time is given as eight o'clock with no mention of a change, so the timing is not the reason.
  • The grass by the park is too wet. — The grass is mentioned as where families should wait, and nothing says it is wet.
