Ms. Ortiz: Dev, your book report is due on Thursday. How far have you gotten?
Dev: I read the whole book, but I haven't written anything yet.
Ms. Ortiz: Start with the part you liked best. Write three sentences about it tonight.
Dev: Okay. Can I show them to you in the morning?
Ms. Ortiz: Yes. Come by before the bell.
The question
Choose the best answer.
What does Ms. Ortiz tell Dev to do tonight?
- Finish reading the book
- Write three sentences about his favorite partCorrect answer
- Turn in his book report
- Meet her before the bell
Why “Write three sentences about his favorite part” is correct
The exchange contains several time words — Thursday, tonight, in the morning — and the question pins the child to one of them. Meeting before the bell is a real instruction, but it belongs to tomorrow, not tonight. On a second listen, ask the child to catch the word 'tonight' and say what comes right before it.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Finish reading the book — Dev says he has already read the whole book; the writing is what has not started.
- Turn in his book report — The report is due Thursday, and the conversation is about how to get started on it.
- Meet her before the bell — This is the right task attached to the wrong time. Dev comes by before the bell in the morning.
