The Lost Mitten

Ben lost one red mitten. He looked under his bed. He looked in his backpack. He did not find it.

At school, Ben saw a red mitten on the fence. It was his!

His friend Rosa waved. "I found it by the gate," she said. "I put it up high for you."

Ben said thank you. He put the mitten on.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Where did Rosa find the mitten?

  • By the gateCorrect answer
  • Under Ben's bed
  • In Ben's backpack
  • On the fence

Why “By the gate” is correct

This is a story-detail question with a built-in trap: the mitten is in two different places in the story, and the question asks about the first one. Rosa says where she found it in her own words, while the fence is only where she later put it. Ask the child to find the sentence where Rosa is talking and read what she says.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Under Ben's bed — Under the bed is one of the places Ben searched and did not find it.
  • In Ben's backpack — The backpack is Ben's other search spot. Both searches came up empty.
  • On the fence — The fence is where Ben saw the mitten, because Rosa had put it there after finding it by the gate.
